| KS3
After-School Club |
| Dear Parents and Guardians,
|
| We would like to remind parents that the new
KS3 After-School Club has now started. Initially it is
running on Mondays and Thursdays in the Youth Centre from 4.00
- 5.30pm. |
| All children in KS3 (Years 7 to 9) are welcome
to attend at a cost of £1.50 per session. Pupils can stay
for part or all of any session and must sign in and out. The
activities on offer include table football, table tennis, board
games, homework support and outdoor recreation. |
| There is the opportunity for pupils to purchase
snacks and drinks (cash only, sorry no cashless catering cards).
The club will be fully supervised by qualified staff at all
times. |
| The club is primarily intended to provide a
safe place for children who are unable to get home after participating
in a school activity or using the library or whose parents may
not be at home until early evening. However, any child who would
like to attend is welcome regardless of whether there is a parent
at home. All pupils attending the after-school club must stay
on the school site between 2.50 and the club opening. |
| It is not necessary to book in advance; pupils
can just turn up at 4.00 after finishing their extra-curricular
activity or library study. |
| We welcome your support for this new initiative
in order that we will be able to continue to run it next term.

| Revision
Guidance 2008 |
 |
During the week 6 -
9 May your child will be taking National Tests (aka 'SATs')
in English, Mathematics and Science and in a following week
(19 - 23 May) they will be taking school tests in other subjects. |
| On the subject pages of the website, pupils
will find particular advice about each subject - which topics
to revise and advice about how to answer the questions etc. |
| Pupils have also been given advice
about revision. The link below takes you to a document that
pupils have access to on the website, and which has been shown
to them during an assembly. It includes advice about planning,
good and bad revision techniques, and avoiding stress. It also
includes planning grids that pupils can print off at home and
use for their own revision. |
Year

| How
to Help your Child Revise |
 |
Year
9 tutors have been asked to provide some guidance for parents
about how they can best support their children through the exam
period in May. Below are just a few suggestions: |
Talk to your child about the subjects they are revising each
day; pin their exam timetable and their revision timetable to
the fridge. |
Help your child organise a suitable working environment where
they can be quiet and calm to revise. |
Encourage your child to revise regularly, in short sessions,
rather than spending a whole day revising at the last minute!
Use incentives e.g. after revising for 30 mins, let them have
a cuppa and a chat! |
Encourage your child to check that they have all the necessary
material especially if they have been absent from school at
any point. |
Offer to test your child as part of their revision. |
Encourage a variety of approaches to avoid boredom. |
Buy them Tesco Value post it notes and highlighters to help
with 'active' revision. |
Encourage your child to do their best....no-one can do more. |

| Year
9 Options Evening (Thursday 7 February) |
| Dear Parents/Guardians, |
| Key Stage 4 Curriculum Choices
2008-2010 |
| Pupils in Year 9 have reached the
stage where they can make certain choices about the curriculum
which they will follow in Key Stage 4. |
| All pupils must study a number
of core subjects then have certain choices to make from a wide
range of other subjects. It is therefore very important that
both pupils and parents are fully informed before making their
choices. |
 |
In
order to help explain to pupils and parents the choices possible,
we are organising a Key Stage 4 Curriculum Evening for
Year 9 pupils and their parents on Thursday, 7th February from
7.00 - 9.00 pm. We hope that all parents and pupils will attend
this evening as it provides an excellent opportunity to explain
the framework of the Key Stage 4 Curriculum, the range of courses
on offer and the process of making the options choices. Pupils
have received an options booklet to explain the possible choices
and will be looking at this during the PD day activities. |
| All pupils will also have a guidance
interview with a senior member of staff after the half term
break (parents are invited to attend these meetings). Letters
explaining the timings of this will be sent home shortly. |
| The main part of the Key Stage
4 Curriculum Evening provides an opportunity to visit each subject
area of the College and to talk to staff about the courses they
will be offering next year. Course displays and samples of classwork
and project work will be available. Pupils who are presently
studying particular courses will also be on hand to answer questions.
|
| There will be a brief introductory
talk in the Performance Hall at 7.00 p.m. for parents of pupils
in tutor groups C, O, M, B and I and at 7.45 p.m. for parents
of pupils in tutor groups E, R, T, N and V. A room plan of the
College will be provided showing the location of the various
subject displays. Prefects will also be on duty to give directions.
|
| We look forward to seeing you on
Thursday 7 February. |
| Yours sincerely, |
Peter Law [
