Annual
Governors’ Meeting with Parents
Dear Parents,
Although the government has removed
the statutory requirement for schools to hold an Annual Governors’
Meeting with parents, here at Comberton Village College
we feel that it is important to continue to provide this opportunity
for parents to discuss any issues concerning the school with
representatives of the governing body and senior staff. The
meeting will be held on Tuesday 13 May at 7.30pm in the School
Hall. If you are able to attend we would be grateful if you
would use the reply slip linked below as soon as possible.
We are constantly striving to improve
the quality of education at Comberton and we value parents’
comments. This usually happens on a day to day basis which helps
us to respond immediately. As you will understand, it is not
appropriate to discuss individual pupils or staff matters at
this meeting. However, if you have a question of a general nature
for the governors would you please include it on your reply
slip with a brief explanation.
Responses can be sent to the college
by
.
We look forward to seeing you at
the meeting on Tuesday 13 May.
Yours sincerely

Parent
Governor Election (Stage 2)
Dear Parents/Guardians
Election of Parent Governor
Following our recent communication regarding the
above, I am pleased to advise that I have received four nominations
for the vacancy for Parent Governor. We shall, therefore, hold an
election and the procedure for this is set out below. All the candidates
have produced a statement and copies of these are given below in
order to help you make your decision. The four nominees are as follows:
Voting will begin at 8.30am on Monday 28 April
2008 and will close at 12.00 noon on Thursday 8 May 2008.
Who can Vote
Any parent, foster parent, guardian or acting parent,
who has a child registered at the school on the 8 May, may vote.
Each person eligible to vote can vote only once irrespective of
the number of children he or she may have at the College.
You can download a Ballot
Sheet here. Each ballot sheet has two Ballot Papers, one for
each parent/guardian. On each Ballot Paper the names of the candidates
are listed in alphabetical order. Each voter should decide which
candidate he or she wishes to vote for and place a cross next to
the name of the candidate chosen.
IN ORDER FOR YOUR VOTE TO COUNT PLEASE READ THE
FOLLOWING PARAGRAPH CAREFULLY. FAILURE TO DO SO COULD MEAN A RUINED
VOTE.
The Education (No.2) Act of 1986 requires the ballot
to be secret but it is also necessary to avoid duplicate voting
and ensure that those ineligible to vote do not do so. Therefore
each ballot paper must be put in a separate envelope which must
be sealed. This envelope should then be enclosed in another envelope
signed over the seal by the voter. The name of the voter and of
his or her child(ren) and tutor group(s) must be printed clearly
on the outside of this envelope.
This information will be used to keep a record
of the return of ballot papers but anyone concerned in the collection
of ballot papers or attending the counting of the votes, will maintain
the secrecy of the ballot.
Ballot papers may be returned in person or via
pupils direct to the Clerk of Governors, Mrs Y. Corkin, or through
the post or, out of school hours, by placing envelopes in the school
letter box at the main door. We are afraid we cannot be responsible
for votes returned in any other way.
Counting the Votes
The votes will be counted at 3.00pm on Thursday
8 May 2008 at the school. All candidates are invited to be present
at the count. The candidate with the highest number of votes will
be declared elected and the result will be made known to parents
as soon as possible.
Yours sincerely,
Stephen Munday [

Parent
Governor Election.
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Our Governing Body has seven elected Parent Governors
and we have always valued their involvement and support. One of
our parent governors will soon be completing their term of office.
There is now, therefore, a vacancy for a parent governor until May
2012 and we would like to invite applications to fill this post.
(Nomination Form).
A proposed timetable for the election process is set out in the
table below.
Any parent who has a child registered at the school
is eligible to stand for election. Nominations must be signed and
dated by a proposer and a seconder as well as the candidate. The
proposer and seconder should also have a child registered at school.
Nominations should clearly state the name, address and telephone
number of the candidate and the name(s) of their child(ren) registered
at the school.
All nominations must be registered with the Clerk
to the Governors, Mrs Y. Corkin, by 12 noon on Wednesday 23 April
2008. Please clearly mark the envelope "Parent Governor Nomination".
Each candidate is entitled to enclose with his/her
nomination, a brief statement which, if an election is held subsequently,
will be distributed to parents.
If more than one nomination is received, details
of the election and method of voting, with ballot papers and copies
of the candidates' statements, will be sent out to all parents via
pupils.
Any candidate for a school governor vacancy will
be asked to complete a Disclosure Application form to enable a CRB
check to be carried out and which will establish eligibility to
serve as a governor. These measures form part of the school's routine
procedures for ensuring the safety of pupils.
Yours sincerely,
Stephen Munday [

Dear Parents/Carers,
News@Com
Your
son/daughter should have brought home a copy of 'News@Com' this
week. It details a range of achievements, new opportunities and
news updates at the school. I hope that you enjoy reading it and
find it a helpful update on at least some of the things that are
happening. Very many thanks are due to all staff who show such commitment
to enable so many opportunities to be available to all students.
Further Developments
The
county have confirmed with us that building work on our next phase
of capacity expansion should start later in the summer term. This
should enable it to be completed by summer 2009, ready for use in
September 2009.
Our statutory proposals
for a new Sixth Form and a new Trust have now been published for
four weeks. The Local Authority and our governors will soon be considering
any comments made. Following that, it will be confirmed what is
to happen with both of these developments. In the case of the possible
Sixth Form, the Local Authority has to confirm a decision next term.
Olympics Update
A
group of students, parents and staff from the school expect to visit
Beijing this summer. Part of the visit will involve seeing certain
Olympic events. A further development of our link with this Olympics
project is reported in News@Com. We have secured funding for six
students to have a study visit to Beijing in the near future. Turning
to 2012, you may have noticed in the local press that we are listed
as a possible site for Olympic teams to train in advance of the
2012 Games. This will be part of the Cambridge Partnership that,
we hope, will be an attractive option for overseas' teams.
Uniform Issues
Parents
know well of our commitment to ensure that all students wear uniform
appropriately at all times at the school. A few reminders seem to
be in order:
Only proper black trousers are permitted. Any form of jeans (for
example, black so-called 'skinny jeans') are not permitted.
Black shoes must be worn. Boots are not permitted.
The same jewellery rules apply. The only visible piercings that
are permitted are one small stud in each ear.
Thank
you once again to all parents for your support in this area.
Easter Break
Term
finishes with final Assemblies on Thursday 20 March.
Monday 7 April is a staff Training Day.
Students return to school on Tuesday 8 April.
Every best wish for an enjoyable Easter break;
Yours sincerely,
Stephen Munday [
] Principal

School
Bus Service.
Dear Parents and Guardians,
The following is a notice that we have received
from the Education Transport people at Cambridgeshire County Council,
who are responsible for managing and running the school bus service.
We thought it would be helpful if all parents had this information
should they need to follow up any issues.
Are you concerned with anything about your school bus?
Do you want to speak to someone who can help?
You can email or phone us.
Email:
Phone: 0845 045 5208.
Please can parents also be aware that pupils may
only travel on the bus for which they have a valid pass. If your
child does not have a valid bus pass, you will need to contact the
county council using either the e-mail address or phone number above.

Tesco
Computer Vouchers 2008
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Since 1992 Tesco has delivered more
than £118 million worth of computer equipment to schools.
We would like to claim equipment for CVC again this year and are
asking you to collect the special Tesco Computers for Schools vouchers
at the checkout every time you shop or buy petrol at Tesco.
In 2007, with
your support, the College managed to collect 41,595 vouchers including
220 vouchers from recycling used printer cartridges and old mobile
phones. We were able to 'purchase' four digital imaging projectors
which are now being used by pupils in the Science Laboratories.
In 2006 we were able to 'purchase' two notebook computers, which
are being used by pupils in the Centre.
We would like
to do better than last year and increase the number of vouchers
collected. CVC starts with 4,395 vouchers which were 'banked' in
2007 and we have set an overall target of 43,500 for 2008. As always,
we depend on your help and generosity.
This year, the Tesco Computers for
Schools scheme started on Monday 3 March and runs until Sunday 11
May. Customers receive one voucher for every £10 spent in
a single transaction in any Tesco store or petrol filling station
during this period.
Please give any vouchers you collect
to your child to bring into school to add to our collection. At
the end of the promotion, hopefully, we will have collected enough
vouchers to exchange for new items of computer-based equipment.
There are collecting boxes in School
Reception, outside the School Office and in the Reception area of
CB3. We are collecting the vouchers until the end of June. Any vouchers
received after this date will be banked for 2009.
Please ask your friends and relatives
- in fact anyone you know - to collect vouchers for us!
We can collect even more Computers
for Schools vouchers if you recycle your used inkjet cartridges
and old mobile phones. See Tesco
Vouchers for futher details.
Thank you in anticipation.

Olympic
Games Training Venue
Sports facilities in Cambridgeshire are
on the starting blocks for the 2012 Olympic Games. Four organisations
in the county have been picked as having suitable facilities for
competitors from home or abroad competing in the London games: Cambridge
University, Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), King's School at Ely
and Comberton Village College, which may be asked to host
training sessions for fencing and judo competitors.
The county's potential Olympic
training camps have been highlighted in a guide unveiled this
week by the London Organising Committee for the 2012 games. The
guide, for competitors and coaches throughout the world, lists
more than 600 locations in the UK deemed suitable to provide training
facilities, both for the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games.
Sebastian Coe, chairman of the London Organising
Committee, said: "We said that we wanted the London Games
to be for athletes, and the facilities listed in this guide will
really help overseas athletes prepare well. It also provides a
great opportunity for towns throughout the UK to get involved
in our plans. The process we have been through shows a great spread
of high quality facilities throughout the UK that can be used
by elite level athletes."
At Comberton
Village College, although we recognise the benefits of good keyboard
skills, we do not teach touch typing as part of our curriculum.
If any pupils (or parents) would like to purchase a self-teach program,
we recommend Disney Learning's 'Adventures in Typing with Timon
and Pumbaa' course, although there are many other good courses available.
If you have internet access, you might
like to try the BBC schools website's version of a touch typing
programme ("Dance
Mat Typing"). You will need the sound turned on as instructions
are given verbally. This short course is suitable for children as
young as seven years old.

International
Bursary Fund
Comberton Village
College strongly believes in the principle that all pupils regardless
of financial background should have the opportunity to experience
an international trip as part of their education at CVC. As a result
the International Bursary Fund has been set up with the aim
of providing financial assistance to those who need it the most.
If you feel that your child would benefit
from taking part in an international trip and that you would be
eligible for financial support from the Bursary Fund, please fill
in the
application
form and return it to Mr N Carrick in a sealed envelope. All
applications will be dealt with in confidence and will be considered
on an individual basis.

Website
Update
The CVC website now includes
a comprehensive Search Facility. Basic search boxes are being
added at the top of individual pages and zoning is being introduced
to exclude searches on duplicated areas of the site.
Work on the Parents area of the website has been
completed but fine tuning the whole site may take several months.
Search reports now appear within a standard 'CVC page'.
The new facility searches web pages plus all linked .doc Word documents,
.pdf Acrobat files and most other popular formats.
The system automatically re-indexes every Wednesday and Friday evenings
to ensure search reports remain up-to-date.
There are no advertisements.
At the moment, the search facility
searches the Information, Reference and Parents
sections of the site. The system will cover the whole CVC web site
by Summer 2008.
Web pages across the CVC site are also
being rewritten to comply with web standard W3C XHTML 1.0 Transitional
to enforce good practice and to maximise cross-browser compatibility.
Work on the Information and Parents pages has now been completed.

Dear Parents/Carers,
Sport@Com/Lingua@Com
You
should be receiving a copy of the latest edition of Sport@Com and
Lingua@Com via your son/daughter this week. They detail the continuing
development of both sporting and language opportunities and achievements
in the areas of these two specialisms of the school. I hope you
enjoy reading them.
Re-designation of Specialisms
Following
its recent Ofsted report, the school has now been officially informed
that it has been permitted to re-designate as a Sports College.
This re-designation will last until our next inspection when it
will be reviewed. In addition, because the overall provision of
the school was rated as outstanding, we are also allowed to continue
with all our other specialism and designations until they are reviewed
at our next inspection. Thus we are also redesignated as:
- A Specialist Language
College
- A Specialist Vocational College
- A Leading Edge School
- A Training School
Consultation on Possible Developments
I
would like to thank all parents who responded to our consultation
on possible significant developments regarding Comberton Village
College. I have worked with governors to summarise all the comments
received. Governors have then confirmed some responses to these
comments. These can all be easily and immediately accessed now on
the Home Page
of the school website.
Proposal to Establish a Third Primary School in Cambourne
Many
parents will know that the Local Authority has recognised the need
to establish a third primary at Cambourne. Under new legislation,
the Local Authority has to establish a competition for any new school
and invite organisations to make proposals. The Local Authority
is not expected to make any proposal itself but rather to act as
the adjudicator for all proposals received. In this new legislative
framework, a decision was made by the governing bodies of Comberton
Village College, The Vine School and Monkfield Park School to submit
a proposal to establish the new school in a strong partnership between
all of these schools. This was all agreed rapidly, close to the
deadline of the submission of proposals once it became clear that
such a possibility existed and could be a positive development for
all schools and for the provision of education of young people in
Cambourne.
The
proposal was submitted by the soon-to-be formed Comberton Educational
Trust. The proposed school would be a foundation school with its
own governing body who would appoint its headteacher and staff.
It would be overseen by the Comberton Educational Trust who would
appoint two of the governors.
Proposals
to establish the new primary school will be in the public domain
very shortly. There is a public consultation scheduled for Monday
18 February at 7.30pm at The Hub in Cambourne. This is overseen
by the Local Authority and they can provide details on this. The
county are due to adjudicate between the proposals in April.
Governors
at Comberton Village College are very keen to confirm that this
proposal would in no way unfavourably affect our positive relationship
and partnership with all of our named partner feeder primary schools.
We remain utterly committed to this in the future as we are now.
The proposal has been made due to the new legislative framework
within which such a proposal has been seen as a way of ensuring
excellent education into the future for all young people in our
catchment area involving a strong ongoing partnership with all partner
feeder primary schools.
Yours sincerely,
Stephen Munday [
